When brakes are unevenly adjusted, braking forces may not be distributed consistently across the tractor and trailer, potentially affecting stopping performance, component wear, vehicle stability, and overall operation.

Heat can provide another clue.
Braking converts vehicle motion into heat. Commercial truck brakes are designed to handle substantial thermal loads, but differences in brake operation can result in some wheel positions becoming hotter than others.
Excessive heat can accelerate wear and affect braking components. Temperature differences may also indicate issues beyond adjustment, including dragging brakes, damaged hardware, bearing problems, contamination, or other mechanical conditions.
Brake adjustment is therefore only one part of a larger inspection process.
Modern heavy-duty vehicles may use automatic slack adjusters intended to maintain appropriate brake adjustment during normal operation. However, the presence of an automatic adjustment mechanism does not eliminate the need for inspection.
An automatic slack adjuster that repeatedly requires manual adjustment may indicate an underlying mechanical problem. Worn components, improper installation, damaged adjusters, incorrect geometry, or other issues may prevent the system from operating as intended.
Repeatedly adjusting a component without determining why it is losing adjustment can leave the underlying problem unresolved.
Brake stroke is another important measurement in air brake inspections.
Pushrod travel can provide information about brake adjustment and operation. Excessive stroke can indicate that a brake is outside allowable adjustment limits or that other mechanical conditions require investigation.
Commercial vehicle brake systems are subject to federal safety requirements, and brake adjustment is among the items examined during roadside and maintenance inspections.
Trailer brakes deserve the same attention as tractor brakes.
A tractor may have properly functioning brakes while the trailer contains adjustment, wear, air system, or mechanical problems. Because both portions contribute to stopping the combination, evaluating only the tractor does not provide a complete picture of braking performance.
Different trailers can also introduce different maintenance histories into daily operation. A tractor may regularly connect to several trailers, each with different mileage, brake wear, adjustment conditions, and maintenance records.
Drivers can play a role in identifying potential brake problems through required inspections and by paying attention to changes in vehicle behavior.
Unusual pulling, abnormal noises, changes in braking response, warning indicators, visible component problems, or other irregularities can indicate the need for further inspection. A noticeable change does not identify a specific mechanical cause, but it can provide an early indication that something deserves attention.
Routine maintenance records can also help identify patterns.
Repeated brake adjustments at the same wheel position, recurring component replacement, unusual wear, or consistent temperature differences may point toward an issue requiring more detailed diagnosis.
Proper brake operation becomes especially important when vehicle weight, road conditions, speed, traffic, and terrain increase braking demands.
An 18-wheeler traveling at highway speed carries significant momentum. Braking performance depends on multiple systems and components functioning together, including tires, suspension, air pressure, brake hardware, adjustment, and driver operation.
